Sil de strandjutter

The story takes place on Terschelling, which is closed off from the rest of the Netherlands at the end of the 19th century. Sil Droeviger, a farmer in Oosterend, supplements his income for his family, consisting of his wife Jaakje and sons Jelle and Wietse, with beachcombing. One day a strong storm arises and Sil rescues a girl from a sunken Swedish dinghy, while the mother drowns. Sil takes the girl home and raises her as his own daughter. He calls her Lobke, just like their daughter who died shortly after birth.

Joy everywhere at Wietse's return. He loves Lobke and wants to get married. Lobke wants nothing more than that, but suddenly it turns out that there is a gossip going on in the village that Maam is pregnant with Jelle. On his own initiative, Wietse goes to Maam's parents to propose to marry Maam in order to avoid the family shame. That goes too far to Lobke because she only knows that Jelle was with her on the night of the party at which Maam says she was with Jelle. Under pressure, Maam tells that the child belongs to Aike. Maam marries Aike and Lobke has her Wietse. That all ends well.
