Dean Francis graduated with a Master of Arts in Directing from the Australian Film Television and Radio School where he picked up the Australian Screen Directors Association Award for Best Directed Drama in recognition of his short Afterlife.

Dean has directed over ten short films which have had more than 70 film festival screenings and won numerous awards, including Best Student Film at the St Kilda Film Festival. In 2001, Dean co-directed, co-wrote, produced and edited the short feature Crazy Richard which premiered at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and was later released in the US on DVD through Ariztical Entertainment. Also included on the DVD release were two half-hour episodes of the internet sitcom I Can't Even Think Straight! which Dean wrote, directed and produced.

Prior to attending the AFTRS Dean completed an Advanced Diploma in Cinematography at the Institute of Lens Arts Australia and also worked as a field producer for ABC Television's youth digital arm Fly TV.

As an actor, Dean has appeared in numerous roles on the stage and screen, including the soap Neighbours.

Dean's latest film Vermin (23 mins) recently made its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Currently, Dean has a slate of feature films in development while freelancing as a commercials director.
